About

Alison Van Houten

My work has appeared in print and online publications including Sunset magazine and Sunset.com, 7x7.com, the San Francisco Chronicle’s website SFGate.com, Santa Barbara SEASONS magazine, Paste.com,  and Complex's Pigeons & Planes, among others.

I cover travel, adventure sports, experimental music and literature—anything that shakes up the quotidian. In addition to cultural journalism, I can write advertorial-style content for your company. Select clients include Adobe, California Avocado Commission, Carnival Cruise Lines, Coca-Cola, Fernet-Branca, FIAT, Mitsubishi, NOLET'S, SF Travel, Travelocity, and Wrigley's Gum. I also offer copyediting and content marketing/social media packages

I hold a bachelor's degree in English with a specialization in Modern Literature and Critical Theory, as well as a minor from the editing track of the extremely selective Professional Writing program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I'm fortunate enough to have studied in the distinguished School of English at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland, as well.

Although the San Francisco Bay Area is my home, I love experiencing different locales. When I'm not writing, you'll find me exploring on foot, be it in the wilderness with a thirty-pound pack or in an urban environment, cup of coffee in hand.
